Ancestral rites

Tripindi Shraddha

Tripindi Shraddha is traditionally performed when the regular shraddha for ancestors has been missed for several years, for the peace of departed family members across generations. As the name suggests, it centres on the offering of three pindas.

When families enquire about Tripindi Shraddha

Families most often ask about it when annual shraddha has not been performed for some years, or on the advice of a priest when they feel ancestral rites remain incomplete. The purohit will listen to your situation before recommending it.

How it is usually performed

In common practice, the three pindas — traditionally of rice, barley and sesame — are offered with worship of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, together with tarpan and the associated shraddha rites. The purohit sets the exact sequence according to your family tradition.

Questions about Tripindi Shraddha

How is Tripindi Shraddha different from Matrugaya Pooja?

Matrugaya Pooja is the shraddha offered specifically for one’s mother. Tripindi Shraddha is offered for ancestors more broadly, traditionally when shraddha has been missed for some years. Families sometimes ask about both on one visit.
